Applications are now being accepted for the Institute's 2010/11 education programme. Click here for more information.
Since its foundation in 1955, the Institute and its members have dedicated themselves to upholding and promoting the highest educational and professional standards in the wine trade.
Master of Wine is both a qualification and a title, usually abbreviated to the letters MW following a member's name. To use these letters an individual must have passed the Institute’s rigorous Masters of Wine examination, which tests their practical and theoretical understanding of the art, science and business of wine.
The Institute currently has 289 members around the world. These Masters of Wine are active in all aspects of the wine industry and include winemakers, importers, buyers, retailers, consultants, journalists, educators, sommeliers and senior executives.
Today, in keeping with its original aims, the Institute promotes a cross-disciplinary approach to understanding wine at the highest level and conducts wine trade education which leads to the qualification Master of Wine. Its annual programme of events includes tastings, master classes and visits to wine producing regions, which provide an independent and authorative perspective on wine today.
