Trained as hotelier and then went to Bordeaux to do a vintage, but stayed on for 18 months working for what is now Cheval Quancard. Returned to UK and joined the Savoy Hotel group for a year before entering UK wine trade.
Held several management and buying roles with different companies gaining experience in all aspects of trade. Became sales and marketing director of French Wine Farmers Ltd in 1972.
Founded Barton Brownsdon & Sadler Ltd (BBS), a specialist agency dealing with French single vineyard wines in 1985. Sold this company in 2004 to retire, but soon became bored and have been working part time as an international wine consultant ever since.
