Biography

Graduated with a BSC in Zoology with an eye toward medical school. However, a year in the vineyards of France, Italy and Germany in the 1970s convinced me otherwise, and served as a prelude to life in the wine industry.

Worked 28 years with Stimson Lane Vineyards and Estates, with interests in Washington and California, where I served as Vice President of Winemaking Research, and Managing Director of the company's joint ventures with Antinori (Col Solare) and Dr Loosen (Eroica).

Retired from Stimson Lane in 2003 to devote myself full time to Betz Family Winery, then in its sixth year. After decades working for a large winery, we opted to keep our resources focused on 3000 cases of red wines from Washington State's Columbia Valley using Bordeaux and Rhone varieties. Vineyard management and cellar work fill my days. Completed construction of a new winery for harvest 2005 that allow those procedures essential to fine winemaking.
