Who serves the wine consumer best

 

How many times does one read in the wine press that the only companies that can truly serve the consumer's needs are family-owned and managed, whilst the big corporations only pander to their shareholders? This was the question to be resolved in this dynamic session. The scene was set by Lynne Sherriff MW, moderator and Master of Ceremonies for the symposium, and the topic was addressed with eloquence and passion by two members of family-owned companies and by two speakers at the helm of large, publicly-owned companies. Sylvie Cazes of Château Lynch Bages and Eduardo Chadwick from the prestigious Chilean company Errazuriz pitted their wits against Margareth Henriquez of Krug/LVMH and Christian Seely, Managing Director of AXA Millésimes. The speakers each argued their cases convincingly and with candour, highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of each business model. As the dialogue developed, it was clear that both families and corporations had a role to play in bringing the greatest of wines to the consumer. At the end there was consensus on the fact that the business of wine is about people and passion. Irrespective of ownership, those that are true to terroir are the custodians of a precious asset with a duty to produce the best wine each vintage which reflects the sense of place and time.

   Moderator  Lynne Sherriff MW
 
Lynne Sherriff MW was the first South African to become a Master of Wine, qualifying in 1993.  She is an independent wine consultant, based in London, and works internationally with clients on production, blending and market requirements.  She has previously held senior executive positions in South Africa and Hong Kong.
 
   Panel  Sylvie Cazes
 
Sylvie Cazes is president of the Board of Directors of Chateau Lynch-Bages and president of the Union des Grands Crus.
 
   Eduardo Chadwick
 
Eduardo Chadwick has overseen the modernisation of the historic, family-owned Viña Errázuriz.  One of the leading influencers in the world of wine and now president of Errázuriz, he is passionate about wine education and, as a Director of Wines of Chile, promotes his country's wines around the globe.
 
   Margareth Henriquez
 
Margareth Henriquez has held senior positions in the wine and spirits industry for more than 20 years with companies including Seagram's, Nabisco and Bodegas Chandon.  Since joining Krug she has redefined the core brand strategy and developed new sales and marketing initiatives and is an executive committe member of Moët Hennessy International.
 
   Christian Seely
 
Christian Seely was appointed managing director of Quinta do Noval in 1993 and of the AXA Millésimes group of vineyards in 2000 and is president of AXA's Bordeaux négociant business.  He is also managing dorector and part owner of Quinta de Romaneira in Portugal and co-founder and joint owner of Coates & Seely Ltd.
