Happy New Year! (3).png

Introduction.pngLooking back, 2017 was an exceptional year for the Institute of Masters of Wine. It started with the move into our new office and ended with the superlative Masters of Wine Endowment Auction.

Jane Masters MW (5).pngIn 2017, for the first time in our 60+ years of history, the Institute moved into a permanent home – a fantastic facility that has already been put to good use. We celebrated 18 new Masters of Wine and received a record number of applications to join the MW study programme so that our student body continues to thrive internationally.

We finished the year in a healthy position with much to look forward to. I would like to welcome Stevie Hawley, who joined the executive team at the start of December as the Office Coordinator and who will ensure all our activities continue to be organised and run in a professional way.

2018 will see the introduction of a residential study programme seminar in Neustadt in Germany to complement the seminars in Adelaide, Bordeaux, Odney, Rust and San Francisco. In June our Living Wine Symposium will take place in Logroño and I hope to see many of you there. The IMW events committees have constructed a full and interesting calendar of tastings and seminars throughout the year. There are MW trips planned to Argentina, Israel, Peru and Bolivia, Italy, Austria, and California. And this year will also see the launch of our new website.

Thank you to all of you involved in the Institute’s many activities. It is an honour to serve as your Chairman at this exciting time. I wish all of you and your families a happy, healthy, peaceful and prosperous New Year!

Jane Masters MW

William (Bill) Warre MW 15 April 1926 - 11 December 2017

Bill Warre MW.pngIt is with great sadness to let you know that Bill Warre MW died on 11 December 2017. He was 91. A memorial service will take place at midday on Thursday 25 January 2018 at St. Mary's Church in Wimbledon Village, London, SW19 7BP.

Bill had been a Member of the Institute since 1960 and was Chairman in 1972. He was born in central London and educated privately. In 1945 he was commissioned from Sandhurst and served in the Royal Lancers in Egypt and Palestine. Bill left the army in 1947 and joined Silva & Cosens (Dow's Port) in 1948 working in Portugal, Burgundy and Bordeaux, before settling in London at Dow's agents until 1973 working with Warre's. Bill retired from Symington Family Importers John E Fells & Sons aged 65 in 1991.

The Institute has been sent some wonderful reminiscences about Bill, some copied below, plus Jancis Robinson MW has published an obituary on her site, available to read here.

"I remember Bill as being one of the more helpful and willing of tutors, a modest man full of knowledge and wisdom, with a warm and ready smile and a gentle sense of humour. He was a credit to the Institute."
Nick Belfrage MW

“In his prime, Bill was one of the most memorable and most characterful of members and old wine trade chums who knew him will greatly miss his wonderful sense of fun and good humour.”
Kenneth Christie MW

"I hope among the reminiscences you have received, is the epic one of Bill on the MW trip to Tuscany in the early 90s. One visit to an eminent Chianti estate coincided with the Grand National. Bill being a man with a liking for gee-gees in no time hijacked the visit by organising a sweepstake and then all of us adjourning to the house to watch the race live on TV. I seem to recall the horses were picked out of Bill's venerable Panama! Our Italian hosts seemed to take the whole thing in their stride or were far too polite to say otherwise! A great character who will be much missed."
Charles Crawfurd MW
