Institute welcomes 5 new Masters of Wine

The Institute is delighted to announce 5 new Masters of Wine, including its first Czech, Malaysian and Israeli Members. The new MWs are Ivan Barbic MW (Switzerland); Eran Pick MW (Israel); Jan Schwarzenbach MW (Switzerland); Lenka Sedlackova MW (Czech Republic, currently living in UK); and Stephen Wong MW (Malaysian born, currently living in New Zealand). Use of laptops for Practical Exams

Following the successful trial of the use of laptop computers for the Practical assessment during the Seminars this year, we are pleased to confirm that the use of computers will be allowed for the Stage 1 Assessment and MW Examination in June 2016. As per the Theory component, the use of computer remains optional for all students. 

Students will be sent a number of practice Practical papers over the coming months.  This will provide an opportunity to work out whether they would like to use a computer for Practical and also to practice using the Examsoft software.

 Geisenheim 2016 - 'Robotics in Viticulture'

The theme 'Robotics in Viticulture' has been confirmed for the IMW Geisenheim Trip 2016. The trip, which is organised by the German Wine Institute, in conjunction with Geisenheim University and VDP - Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter will be from Friday 23rd September to Sunday 25th September 2016. 

This trip is open to MWs and MW Students.

Volcanic Wines Seminar and Tasting - Sarah Abbot MW and Nancy Gilchrist MW 

The seminar took place in the morning of the 11th February at Chandos House. It was sold out, with 50 attendees, and with a total of 55 wines generously donated by producers from France, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Spain and US.

We would like to be able to share these with the Institute community, as there is always a strong appetite to keep updated with various MW activities and goings-on. 

We will then share this in the newsletters and other media.

We plan to hold an information session at ProWein this year, to give aspiring MWs the chance to know a little more about the Institute and the Study Programme. The Chairman of the Institute, Sarah Jane Evans MW, will be there with Penny Richards, the Institute’s Director.

It will be on Sunday 13 March 2016, at 18.30. It’s being hosted by the Wine Institute of California, California Pavilion, Hall9, A06-C16.

If you know of people who will be interested, please do give them the information.

We will also be awarding the IMW/Drinks Business Winemakers’ Winemaker Award in the Kurt Schoop International Lounge on the evening of Monday 14 March, from 1900. You have already received an invitation. Please make sure to RSVP as this is a very popular event and we would hate for MWs to be turned away. Previous winners of this prestigious award include Peter Sisseck of Pingus, Peter Gago of Penfold’s, Paul Draper of Ridge, Anne-Claude Leflaive, and (last year) Egon Müller.

IMW 21 Club Lunch - John Casson MW - 3.10.2016

The date for the 21 Club Lunch has been confirmed for Monday 3rd October at Oxford and Cambridge Club, in the Princes Marie Louise Room. 

John Casson MW writes: 

'This year, we especially welcome those that became MW's in 1995. I believe this is an excellent occasion for more senior members of the Institute to interact with younger colleagues. At the lunch last year, we were delighted to see both Bill Warre MW and Colin Anderson MW'.

RAW WINE FAIR ANNOUNCES LONDON DATES FOR 2016 PLUS EXPANSION TO NEW YORK AND A RETURN TO BERLIN

Thanks to the huge success of the RAW wine fairs in recent years, November will see a massive expansion for all natural, organic & biodynamic wine lovers as the fair makes tracks not just for Berlin (to which it is returning for a second year after the popularity of its first German show last year), but also across the pond to the Big Apple! RAW wine fair NYC will be launching in Brooklyn on the 6th & 7th November.

But first it’s back to the city of its birth, London, where RAW will be celebrating its 7th edition on the 15th & 16th May at the Truman Brewery on Brick Lane. For two days, author and wine expert Isabelle Legeron will be bringing together the best in the low-intervention organic, biodynamic and natural wine industry, alongside artisan food stalls, and craft beer, offering an amazing opportunity to expand both your knowledge and your taste buds. 

Over 150 growers will be bringing their wines and expertise to RAW offering the opportunity to sample the wines and talk to the people behind them – the farmers, producers, distributors and sommeliers. The infamous biodynamic winemaker Olivier Cousin will even be bringing a barrel of wine with him from his vineyard in the Loire Valley, a first for the UK. Olivier, his wife Claire and fair visitors will bottle the wines together directly at RAW using bottles opened at the fair itself. Bottles can be pre-bought online with tickets for only £10 - a steal of a price since the same wine in a shop costs nearly double that amount.

With the increasing trend for provenance and all things organic, interest in natural wine is ever-growing, with low-intervention organic and biodynamic wines being offered in restaurants and bars around the country. So, whether you’re an amateur or a connoisseur, RAW is the perfect place to learn more from the hundreds of wines on offer.
