Esterházy Foundation

The Esterházy Foundation became a major supporter of the Institute in 2009.

The Esterházy Foundation arose from the Austrian holdings of the Esterházy family, princes of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It includes forestry, property and land management, and a winery in Burgenland.

The cultural section maintains the family’s historic properties and art works and invests in young, promising artists across all forms of culture.

The cultural achievements of the Princes of Esterházy in the Pannonian area have spanned centuries. The Esterházys not only established magnificent buildings, but were also generous patrons and passionate art collectors. Goethe spoke of the “fairy kingdom of the Esterházys".

The Esterházy tradition has also been great in wine: for 250 years, the House of Esterházy has been devoted to producing wine, owning top vineyards in the centre of the winegrowing district of Burgenland, on the southern slopes of the Leithaberg and Ruster Hügelland. The unique symbiosis of calciferous soils and an exceptional microclimate under the influence of Lake Neusiedl yields wines of special terroir character.

In 2006 a new state-of-the-art winery, costing more than €6 million, was set into the landscape just outside Eisenstadt. It is equipped with the most modern vinification technology, which aims to bring the typicity of site and varietal perfectly into the glass.

Elisabeth Kamper, Managing Director of the Esterházy Winery, commented: “The Esterházy family is very proud to become a supporter of the Institute.”
