The business of the symposium began on the morning of Friday 25 June. Dr. Josef Schuller MW, Chairman of the Institute, and Fiona Morrison MW and Jacques Lurton, Co-chairmen of Forging Links, welcomed delegates from 31 different countries. Georges Haushalter, Vice President of the Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux - the principal sponsor of Forging Links - and President of Union des Maisons de Bordeaux then opened proceedings with his keynote address on the theme of Bordeaux reaches out to the world. |

Dr. Josef Schuller MW - Chairman, The Institute of Masters of Wine Josef Schuller became the first Austrian Master of Wine in 1998, and was elected the first non-UK Chairman of the Institute in 2008. Born and raised in Burgenland, Austria, he gained a degree in business studies in Vienna before carrying out wine marketing research and gaining his PhD in Stellenbosch in South Africa. He was a Fulbright scholar at Berkeley, California and a consultant for Robert Mondavi Winery before he founded the Austrian Wine Academy in 1989, where he remains managing director today. |

Fiona Morrison MW - Co-Chairman, Forging Links Fiona has over 25 years of experience in fine wine in Europe and the USA. A winner of numerous awards for her wine journalism, she is a former head of external relations at the CIVB. Since marrying Belgian negociant and Le Pin owner Jacques Thienpont in 1997, she divides her time between Belgium and Pomerol. |
