The wine industry has been very slow in its adoption of the internet, and on certain levels it has simply missed this revolution. However, in the last few years, Web 2.0 has profoundly changed internet usage, and may represent a unique opportunity for our industry finally to catch up. The panel, moderated by Christophe Macra MW, reviewed the latest trends on the internet and assessed their relevance and potential for the wine industry. The lively and informed discussion covered blogs, consumer reviews, social networks, video, mobile applications, augmented reality and an analysis of new buying patterns. An exciting range of speakers shared their expertise. Jancis Robinson MW successfully moved from traditional media to the web with jancisrobinson.com. After having created Virgin wines, a pure internet player, Rowan Gormley launched Naked Wines, one of the most innovative online wine businesses. Eric LeVine, the man behind the leading site for consumer reviews, CellarTracker and its new version GrapeStories, shared his experience of consumer audiences, while Michael Linton, former Chief Marketing Officer of eBay and BestBuy, revealed the internet strategies of more innovative industries. |
