The Institute’s 8th International Symposium, held in Florence from 15-18 May, was an enormous success.  It was the largest event that the Institute has ever organised, and attracted attention from around the world.

Thank you to everyone who joined us in Florence, and helped to make the 2014 Symposium such an outstanding success.

Now, some facts and figures from Florence:

  • We had 460 people attending, of whom 98 were Masters of Wine, and 64 MW students.
  • We also had 32 spouses and friends join us in the evenings
  • People came from 35 different countries, including Brazil, Columbia, Japan, Lithuania, Jordan, Taiwan and Venezuela.
  • We served more than 200 different wines.

The range of activity on social media illustrates the interest that the Symposium held for the wine world.

We had 10,739 tweets using the Symposium hashtag or mentioning ‘mastersofwine’, with 36,745 retweets. The Twitter reach, which measures the number of individual ‘events’ (i.e. somebody seeing a Tweet on their Twitter feed with the hashtag or our Twitter handle) was almost 55 million.

We experienced a a 700 percent uplift in page likes on Facebook, and our website showed an increase of a third on normal traffic.

So, see you at the 9th Symposium in 2018. We’re working out where it will be, and will let you know as soon as we can.

Istituto Grandi Marchi

The Symposium is being generously sponsored by the Istituto Grandi Marchi.

Istituto Grandi Marchi is the result of the determination and enthusiasm of nineteen of the most important Italian wineries to promote the culture and commercialisation of Italian high quality wine on world markets. It unites families and brands which characterise the Italian wine-making tradition - each one extremely innovative yet highly representative of the production of their region. Each winery is defined by the high standards of its products and brand image at national and international levels. They are families and brands which encapsulate the identity of Italian wine which is synonymous with quality and style throughout the world.
