High pass rate achieved for the Stage 1 Assessment of the MW Study Programme

Students on the Master of Wine Study Programme have received their results from the Stage 1 Assessment. In June this year students took the Stage 1 Assessment in London, Sydney and San Francisco. Over 70 percent of those students have passed and have been invited to move to Stage 2 of the Study Programme.

This year’s high pass rate reflects the calibre of students currently in the MW Study Programme. The Institute is seeing more applications to the Study Programme year on year, and only accepts the brightest and best people from the international wine trade. Over the last two years the Institute has raised the pass mark for the Stage 1 Assessment and changed the admissions criteria, to make it tougher to get on the Study Programme. These changes were made to ensure that candidates have a greater possibility of becoming a Master of Wine.

The MW Examination also took place in June this year, with a record number of students from across the globe sitting the exam. Those students will find out their results on 5 September 2016.

The Institute is accepting applications for the MW Study Programme until Friday 22 July 2016.

Olivier Chapman, Head of Study Programme and Development said:

“These results reflect the commitment, focus and determination of the students, to pursue the highest standards needed for success in the MW Study Programme. The MWs involved in the delivery of the Study Programme have worked tirelessly to support the students on the programme, through involvement in Course Days and Seminars, assignment marking, mentoring and student trips. Thanks to their support and the students’ hard work, we have seen a very pleasing level in the work of Stage 1 students this year. Well done all.”

Study Programme Wines 2015-2016

The Institute of Masters of Wine would like to thank all those who generously supplied wines to the 2015-16 Study Programme. The wines were featured at over 30 Course Days in London and at five residential Seminars in Adelaide (Australia), San Francisco (USA), Rust (Austria), Bordeaux (France) and Berkshire (UK).

Both the Course Days and Seminars were attended by MW students from 35 countries, and by over 60 Masters of Wine. The wines were used for practical tastings and mock exams which guide students’ preparation for both the Stage 1 Assessment and the MW Examination. In June this year a record number of students sat the MW Examination and over 85 students took the Stage 1 Assessment in London, San Francisco and Sydney. Students who took the Stage 1 Assessment will find out on Monday (18 July 2016) if they have been successful in progressing to the next stage of the Study Programme. There are over 320 students from around the world on the Study Programme, which is open for applications until Friday 22 July 2016.

The supply of the below wines for the Study Programme ensures the Institute can continue to offer a rounded experience to students on their journey to becoming a Master of Wine.
