Hunter Valley Semillon compared to (much of) the rest of the world

23 January 2019 , 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM  | London

Semillon too often loiters in the shadow of Sauvignon Blanc and residual sweetness. In this seminar, we focus attention solely on Semillon, and solely on dry styles of Semillon.

Made dry, Semillon seems niche, nerdy, not so fashionable. But why? Quality can be palpable. Perhaps it’s just our perception that needs an upgrade. In which case, you’re in the right place …

In Australia’s Hunter Valley, Semillon reaches unarguable peaks of expression of quality, age worthiness and uniqueness of style. Hunter Valley Semillon is benchmark Semillon. We will taste mini-verticals of both Tyrell’s Vat 1 and Mount Pleasant Lovedale, and have both producers on our expert panel.

To counterpoint the benchmark, we’ll turn to Bordeaux, including to explore the growing phenomenon that is dry Semillon made in Sauternes terroir. Château Sigalas-Rabaud joins our expert panel.

After France and Australia (80+% of global plantings), South Africa and Chile have some of the most extensive plantings of Semillon, including rare parcels of old vines. We’ll taste and discuss some of the exciting work being done in both locations.

Among all of this, we’ll try to pinpoint what exactly is the pure, varietal definition of Semillon. How much of what we taste is location and how much is winemaking? A couple of the wines have a sprinkling of Sauvignon, which may open discussion around blending versus solo status for Semillon as its standout identity.

Be part of this exceptional semillon seminar.
