A new model for terroir?

15 October 2018 , 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM  | London

Climate, slope, aspect, elevation... the list of variables considered as creating ‘terroir' is already long but soil is generally accepted as one of the most influential. For many years the belief that calcium and minerals in the soil directly influence the style of a wine has been widespread. Dr Andrew Pirie, however, has a rather different theory. This pioneer of the Australian cool-climate wine industry, with a PHD in viticulture, believes terroir relates more to the water balance of a vine, where humidity, evapotranspiration and soil drainage interplay to sculpt wine character indicative of a region. His research provides an explanation for the wide range of wine styles produced within a single temperature zone. In this evening seminar, Dr Pirie will attempt to persuade you of the validity of his argument not only through his terroir model but also through a structured tasting of wines that have been especially tested and analysed for this event.
