Burgundy tasting

3 May 2019 , 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM  | London

The Institute of Masters of Wine is relaunching its vintage Burgundy tasting, looking at the region’s wines after bottling. The tasting will focus on the 2016 vintage and will showcase wines from Chablis to Beaujolais, highlighting 1er Cru and Grand Cru wines produced from domaine-grown fruit in the Côte d’Or.

The 2016 vintage was one of the region’s most challenging yet qualitative. It was a vintage that was heavily marked by damaging frost that swept across the region on 26 April, making it the worst in the Côte d’Or since 1981. Unlike most years where frost tends to bite mostly on the lower placed vineyards, in 2016 many of the buds in well-placed 1er Cru and Grand Cru sites were burnt by the sun the following morning. Damage was cited as far north as Marsannay and as south as Chassagne-Montrachet, Saint Aubin and Rully.

Chablis was not spared from the frost either, though it was not as severe. The region further endured a May hailstorm damaging vines. Producers in the southern Mâconnais and Beaujolais did not experience frost, but were hit with a devastating hail storm on 13 April. Whilst some producers made no wine, the northern Mâconnais had fairly generous yields.

For those grapes that remained in the weather-ravaged areas, the quality was generally high and the crop healthy due to the increased aeration. Reds are often concentrated yet classic with notable flesh, polished yet present tannins and moderate+ acidity, producing medium-drinking to long-term cellaring wines. Though some whites are more classic in style, some also cross over into riper, more tropical fruit flavours due to the unusually low yields and quicker ripening.

Due to the exceptionally reduced production across the region, the tasting will be limited to only 60 participants.
