Franck Moreau

Franck Moreau was born in Macon (South Burgundy), France. He grew up in the Beaujolais, watching winemakers and was surrounded by vineyards. He undertook four years of hospitality training in Macon, and completed various specialised wine courses in Dijon. Franck's passion for wine brought him all the way to Australia. In September of 2004, he started work as Head Sommelier for Pier Restaurant Sydney, and in October 2005, he joined The Merivale as Group Sommelier.

Franck is one of senior Leader of Merivale. He oversees the full wine program (buying, developing and training staff and overseeing over 24 sommeliers and 30 wine lists). Franck worked for many star Michelin restaurant in France and England, included: 'La Rotonde' near Lyon, ‘La Tour D’Argent’, famous for its cellar of over 500 000 wines, ‘Gordon Ramsay at Claridges’, 'Marcus Waring at The Savoy Grill'.

In October 2011 Franck successfully passed the Master certificate of the master sommelier program in London.

Franck's awards and accolades include:

  • In 2010 awarded top 12 sommelier in the World in Chile and awarded Sommelier of the Year by SMH Good Food Guide
  • In 2011 awarded Sommelier of the Year by Gourmet Traveller and won the Best Sommelier of Australia
  • In 2012 won Best Sommelier of Asia-Oceania competition in South Korea, organised by the Association de la Sommellerie Internationale (ASI)
  • In 2013 Finished 7th in the World at the meilleur sommelier du monde competition (World’s Best Sommelier Competition) held in Tokyo
  • In 2014 and 2015 awarded the ‘hall of fame’ from WINE Gourmet traveller in 2014 and 2015 for this involvement in the wine industry.

Franck is currently coordinating the Court of Master Sommelier Oceania courses in Australia, is Vice President of Sommelier Australia and in charge of the New South Wales Chapter, and Head judge for la Chaine des Rôtisseurs in Australia.
