Famiglia Cecchi award bursary to MW student Gabriele Gorelli

Famiglia Cecchi, the Italian family-owned wine producer with estates across the region, has awarded stage 2 MW student Gabriele Gorelli a £1,500 bursary to aid his MW study programme journey.

The competition asked Italy-based MW students to answer an essay question set by the producer and to highlight their historic and ongoing involvement in the Chianti Classico region.

Andrea Cecchi, owner and winemaker at Cecchi, said, “As a very long-established family wine business, we are so proud to be able to support the studies of students in this very worthwhile cause. We found the standard of entries to be very high and each student had taken a fresh perspective on the question of how to build the profile of wines from the Chianti and Chianti Classico regions. We wish Gabriele and all his fellow Master of Wine students the very best of luck with their studies and future plans in the world of wine.”

Gabriele, who is from the Montalcino region of Tuscany, said, “I really think Chianti, Classico in particular, deserves higher attention and reputation around the world. Commanding higher prices, it would let wineries to be economically viable and sustainable, helping to preserve culture, landscape and traditions that are really the soul of Tuscan wine.”

Olivier Chapman, Head of Study Programme and Development at the Institute of Masters of Wine, said, “We were thrilled when Cecchi approached the IMW to offer a scholarship to one of our students based in Italy. It’s great to have a wine producer looking to support our students in this way – we know it is something that is greatly appreciated by them.”

Gabriele will be presented with his bursary at the Famiglia Cecchi winery in June.
