23 Sep 14

The new Chairman of the Institute of Masters of Wine is Sarah Jane Evans MW.

Evans, who is the 52nd Chairman, is an award winning wine writer and author. She also judges and lectures internationally.

Evans studied Classics, and Social and Political Sciences at the University of Cambridge, and became a Master of Wine in 2006. She was awarded the Robert Mondavi Winery prize for the highest overall marks in the theory exams.

Speaking after her election, she said, ‘This is a very exciting time to become Chairman. There is a real sense of energy in the Institute, particularly as a result of our recent Symposium in Florence and the celebrations for our 60th anniversary a year ago. Among my key interests in the next two years will be ensuring that we retain our relevance to the ever-evolving wine trade, and that Membership of the Institute continues to be the ambition of the very best in the world of wine.’

Evans has a special interest in the wines of Spain, and is co-Chair of the Decanter World Wine Awards for Spain and for Sherry. She is a member of the Gran Orden de Caballeros de Vino for services to Spanish wine.

She is also a Freeman of the City of London, a Trustee of the André Simon Memorial Fund, and a Patron of the HIV/AIDS charity The Food Chain.

Evans lives in London with her husband Richard, and the couple have two daughters.
