Lallemand seminar series

We are pleased to announce that IMW supporter Lallemand will return to IMW HQ in March for their latest seminar series. This year will explore the topic State of flux: microbiological solutions to making wine in an uncertain climate presented by Ann Dumont M.Sc, Anthony Silvano Ing. Oen, Marion Bastien Ing Oen, Sam Harrop MW and Dirceu Vianna Junior MW. Tickets are currently available for Masters of Wine and MW students only.



ProWein 2020 - Winemakers' Winemaker Award

Location: Messe Centre, ProWein, 

The IMW/drinks business tenth Winemakers’ Winemaker Award presentation will take place on Monday 16 March 2020 at ProWein. The award was introduced in 2011 to recognise outstanding achievement in the field of winemaking. It is voted for by MW winemakers and the previous winners of this prestigious award. The previous are Peter Sisseck, Peter Gago, Paul Draper, Anne-Claude Leflaive, Egon Müller, Àlvaro Palacios, Eben Sadie, Jean-Claude Berrouet and Angelo Gaja.

This event is by invitation only, managed by the drinks business. Full details and how to RSVP are available in the members' area of the website here.

The organisers of ProWein are kindly offering free entry for MWs to this year's event. They are currently preparing your voucher codes, and we expect to be able to share these with you in the next week or so.

Mark Bingley MW

Mark BMark Bingley MW has decided to step down from his role as Chair of the European Events Committee. Mark, who became a Master of Wine in 1983, has contributed more than 10 years in this role and built an impressive portfolio of IMW events. The committee celebrated his achievements and immense contribution in this role, at an intimate dinner in December. Anne McHale MW, who has been a member of the committee since 2017, has been welcomed as the new chair. New to the committee this year is Pedro Ballesteros Torres MW, Regine Lee MW and Emma Symington MW. MWs can view the full list of committee members here.


Fiona Morrison MW 

Fiona MFiona Morrison MW's recently released book 10 Great Wine Families has been reviewed on JancisRobinson.com. Here is an extract from the review, written by Tamlyn Currin: "In many ways, this is a most fascinating psychology of family relationships and success, seen through the prism of wine. Beautifully written, with a treasure trove of personal details and Morrison’s analysis – thanks to her unique perspective – that will give these glorious wines yet one more dimension." Jeremy Cukierman MW 

Jeremy CJeremy Cukierman MW is the main speaker featured in videos that are part of the Champagne MOOC, a teaching tool launched by the Comité Interprofessionnel du vin de Champagne (CIVC). The are four educational modules available, which are made up of short videos with illustrative contents and texts covering all aspects of Champagne - production, terroir, history, sustainability, tasting and service.



Demetri Walters MW  

Demetri WWe are sure you'll join us in wishing the best to Demetri Walters MW, who has started out on his own as an independent wine consultant. He will continue what he did for some 18 and a half years at Berry Bros.& Rudd/Fields Morris and Verdin: conducting on-trade wine education and product training, as well as providing wine tastings and events to the public. Demetri's remit will continue to be international in scope.


Tim Wildman MW 

Grape to GlassA new series of films called Grape to Glass has launched on Tim Wildman MW’s WineTutor.tv website. Tim and his film crew have spent the last two years travelling to California, Australia, Spain and New Zealand to interview the key figures behind some of the world most famous wine brands. The Grape to Glass films look at the entire value chain from viticulture and winemaking through handling of goods, distribution and marketing to contemporary issues. The first series of five films features leading Rioja brand Campo Viejo, with films to follow later this year with Jacobs Creek, Villa Maria, Delicato Family Vineyards and more to be announced.



Isabelle Legeron MW

RAW WINEIsabelle Legeron MW would like to extend an invitation to MWs to attend RAW WINE London on 8-9 March 2020. Created by Isabelle in 2012, RAW WINE is a community of low-intervention organic, biodynamic and natural wine producers from around the world. The event provides an opportunity for these producers to showcase their fine drinks to the trade and consumers, and is set to welcome a brand new trio of northern European producers for the first time - a wine producer from the Netherlands who farms organically and has eliminated all copper and sulphur usage from the vineyard; an urban, natural wine producer from Finland; and a Danish distillery that crafts seasonal spirits. Chris Yorke takes the helm at Austrian Wine Marketing Board

AWMBAs of the 1 January 2020, Chris Yorke took the helm of the Austrian wine industry’s service organisation and IMW principal supporter, the Austrian Wine Marketing Board (AWMB). With his international expertise, strategic orientation and the concentrated capabilities of his team, AWMB is excited for a bright and prosperous future. Speaking of his new role, Chris said, ‘It is our objective to recognise and exploit the further potential for export, adding to the development of value and enhancing the profile of Austrian wine’. The IMW was delighted to welcome Chris to the annual awards ceremony in November, and look forward to working with him and the team in the years ahead.



International Wineries for Climate Action welcomes new members

IWCAInternational Wineries for Climate Action (IWCA) has announced four new applicant wineries have committed to tackle the severity of the climate crisis, by taking immediate action to reduce their carbon emissions. The wineries include Spottswoode Estate (U.S.A), IMW supporter Symington Family Estates (Portugal), VSPT Wine Group (Chile) and Yealands Wine Group (New Zealand). Founded in February 2019 by IMW supporters Familia Torres (Spain) and Jackson Family Wines (U.S.A), IWCA is a collaborative working group committed to accelerating innovative solutions that will mitigate the impacts of climate change through the decarbonization of the global wine industry. IWCA’s objective is for all members to have a long-term strategy to reduce 80% of their carbon emissions by 2045, with a shorter-term target of 50% by 2030.
