Practical exam

Following the message included in the December newsletter regarding changes to the practical examination team, we are pleased to confirm the new practical exam paper chairs for the 2019 examination will be Ulf Sjodin MW (Sweden), Peter Mitchell MW (UK) and Peter Marks MW (USA). John Hoskins MW will be both overall Practical Exam Chair and Chief Examiner for the 2019 examination. From the 2020 examination, Peter Marks MW will assume the overall Practical Exam Chair role.

The paper chairs will work in conjunction with a team of examiners for each paper as well as the Chief Examiner to select wines and set the exam papers. They will also have oversight responsibilities for the marking and moderation processes to ensure that all students are being assessed in a fair and consistent manner, again working closely with the Chief Examiner. Following these changes, Peter Marks MW has stepped down as Practical Chair on the Education Committee and Matthew Stubbs MW has taken over in this role with immediate effect.

Maximilian Riedel at The Royal Horticultural Halls, London

Riedel tastingJoin Maximilian on Monday 21 January 2019 at The Royal Horticultural Halls in London and participate in a unique sensory experience as, in a tutored comparative tasting, he guides you through an enjoyable and educational event, which shows the difference the shape and size of a glass makes to our perception and enjoyment of wine. The Performance Range, grape varietal specific and showcasing a unique optical impact on the bowl of the glass, has been described as the ultimate loudspeaker for fine wines. The additional surface area that the creation of the optical effect gives, increases the inner surface area, allowing the wine to open up and fully show every aroma and subtle nuance.

Doors will open at 1800, where a collection of Riedel’s most famous pieces will be on display, and the main event will then commence at 1900, where guests will be seated for Maximillian’s tasting which will last for approx. 90 minutes. Tickets start from less than £60 per person (when bought as a group ticket) and all participants will each take home, free of charge, a Riedel Performance Tasting Set, worth £90, as used in the tasting. VIP tickets for two are also available and include (per couple) £180 worth of glasses, plus a hand-made Riedel decanter, worth £225.

As a Master of Wine or student on the MW study programme, Riedel (an IMW Major Supporter) are offering you the chance to save 10% on tickets for this event, to take advantage please log into the Members' area of the website here (or the student area of the website here).
