MW study programme

MW student Sandeep Ghaey awarded Constellation Brands stage two scholarship

SandeepThis week we announced that Master of Wine student Sandeep Ghaey has been awarded a Constellation Brands scholarship. A principal supporter of the IMW, Constellation Brands offers two scholarships a year to North America-based students in the MW study programme.

Sandeep is a stage two student in the programme and will receive $2,000 to support his preparation for the MW examination next year. He will also spend a day visiting Constellation Brands in Napa with crucial personnel from winery production and marketing, and meet the Constellation Brands' MWs – Nova Cadamatre MW and Mark de Vere MW – who selected Sandeep as the recipient of the scholarship. Sandeep achieved his CMS Advanced Sommelier certification in 2016 and has more than 15 years’ experience working in the wine and hospitality industries. After spending time in restaurants and distribution, he established Vinic Wine, a wine bar and education hub in Chicago.

MW trips

Chile MW trip

ChileA report extract from the recent MW trip to Chile by Adrian Garforth MW. "It has been 10 years since I last visited Chile, and it is clear that the industry has evolved greatly during this period. A decade ago, the Chilean wine industry was blighted with the 'Volvo' tag of being a safe if rather uninspiring producer, offering wines of good quality at appropriately keen prices. Although a few people were already extolling the virtues of Chile as a high quality producing region, these were small isolated voice struggling for the oxygen of good publicity, set against a backdrop of high volume production at competitive prices. I am therefore delighted to report that the industry is now evolving and moving forward at great pace."

Lynne Coyle MW

Lynne CoyleLynne Coyle MW’s wine Rós has received a Harpers Design Award for its label. Rós is Lynne’s first personal winemaking project and is a collaboration with long-time friend Alicia Eyaralar, winemaker and owner of Bodegas Tandem in Navarra. The vineyards are located in the Yerri Valley, Navarra, close to the Pyrenees and the Atlantic Ocean. Building on the Celtic name Rós, which translates from Gaelic into rose, and a nod to her Scottish roots, Lynne wanted to create a label with a Charles Rennie Mackintosh / Arts and Crafts vibe. Lynne’s son Edward, a graduate of the National College of Art and Design in Dublin, designed the label and the creative threads were executed by graphic designer Elizabeth Foley.

Nicholas Jackson MW

Nicholas JacksonNicholas Jackson MW has published a new book titled Beyond Flavour: The Indispensable Handbook to Blind Wine Tasting. Beyond Flavour is a practical guide to blind wine tasting which offers to help wine lovers increase their knowledge and improve their blind tasting skills. The book provides detailed descriptions of the key attributes of major grape varieties and wine producing regions, and argues that assessing a wine's structure - acid structure in white wines and tannin structure in red wines - is a more reliable indicator of a wine's identity than the traditional reliance on flavour.

Anne Krebiehl MW

Anne KrebiehlAnne Krebiehl MW has been awarded the 2019 Vinea Wachau Steinfeder Prize, which honours ambassadors and friends of Wachau wines in recognition of journalistic achievements. Held annually, the event took place at Landhaus Bacher in Mautern, Austria, where Vinea Wachau chairman Emmerich Knoll presented the Prize while Dr Neil Beckett, editor of The World of Fine Wine, gave the laudatory speech. The bouquet Anne can be seen holding is of the eponymous Steinfeder grass.

Wine Masters - Sarah Heller MW and Richard Hemming MW

Wine MastersSarah Heller MW and Richard Hemming MW are featured in the second season of Wine Masters: Italy, a documentary series exploring terroir, taste and tradition. This season tells the wine stories of Italian families in Piedmont, Tuscany, Veneto, Campania and Sicily. The production visited all the Italian wine areas three times; during winter, summer and harvest time. Important storylines are about Etna, Pompei, the renaissance of Italian wine, appassimento hype and the competition between Barbaresco and Barolo. But there is also a critical note about mass production, where popular Italian wines were, and still are, victims of their own success. Wine Masters: Italy has been released worldwide on Wine Masters TV, Vimeo On Demand, Amazon, iTunes and Google Play.

The Vintners' Company

VintnersAdrian Garforth MW and Peter Richards MW feature in a new video which aims to provide a clearer insight into the work of IMW supporter The Vintners' Company. Whilst its origins lay in the import, regulation and sale of wine, its historic hall on the banks of the Thames is now well known to many in the wine trade as a popular events venue. The Vintners' Company was instrumental in establishing both the Wine & Spirits Education Trust in 1969 and the Institute of Masters of Wine in 1953, and is one of the 'great twelve' livery companies of the City of London.
