2019 MW examination questions and wines revealed

Wines and q'sWe have published the questions from the 2019 MW examination, including the list of wines for the practical part of the examination. The full list of wines can be found here, along with the accompanying questions. The list also shows the questions from the theory component of the MW exam. From 3 June to 7 June 160 students sat the theory and practical exams in London, San Francisco and Adelaide. Over four days students had three 12-wine blind practical papers and five theory papers on the subjects of viticulture; vinification and pre-bottling procedures; handling of wines; the business of wine; and contemporary issues.

The practical and theory exams form the second stage of the MW study programme. The first step is the stage 1 assessment, a one-day examination comprising a 12-wine blind tasting exam in the morning and a theory exam in the afternoon. Over 110 students sat the stage 1 assessment in London, San Francisco and Adelaide on 2 and 3 June. Students can only progress to stage 2 of the MW study programme by successfully passing this assessment.

The list of wines and questions used in the stage 1 assessment can be found here. Stage 1 students will find out their results on 29 July 2019. Stage 2 students will know their exam outcome on 2 September 2019. Students at stage 3 of the programme - the research paper - will know if they have been successful and announced as Masters of Wine on Friday 30 August 2019.

Roussillon trip review by Andrew Stewart MW

RoussillonA report extract from the recent MW trip to Roussillon by Andrew Stewart MW. "Our group of 15 Masters of Wine gathered in Perpignan for what was to be a truly memorable exploration of the Roussillon region and its wines. We came together from various parts of the world – France, Germany, Ireland, Singapore, and UK – with a common interest to learn more about this historic region. Funded and arranged by the Conseil Interprofessionnel des Vins du Roussillon (CIVR), we were accompanied by the experienced and knowledgeable CIVR director Eric Aracil and his assistant Kim Loranger. From the IMW we were ably led by Justin Howard-Sneyd MW and we were also accompanied by Marketing and Communications Officer Kara Tonitto."

Mosel trip review by Jean-Michel Valette MW

MoselA report extract from the recent MW trip to Mosel, by Jean-Michel Valette MW. "Six excellent masterclasses, a few vertiginous vineyards ascents and descents, a 30km long walk-around tasting, not to mention daily opportunities for limerick-ing creativity made for a most memorable and engaging trip to the Mosel in pursuit of the current state of Riesling there. A good interplay of transport - from bus to boat to foot - added perspective and exercise; while multiple meetings with a new generation of Mosel winemakers added inspiration and excitement for the future in an area where viticulture is expensive and where demand has, at times, fled elsewhere." Read the full report and see if you can match the thanking limerick with its MW author!
