  Ten new Masters of Wine

380 Masters of Wine in 30 countries

10 new masters of wineOn Friday 1 September 2018 the IMW was delighted to announce ten new Masters of Wine, including the first female winemaker of Greek descent and the first female winemaker based in Spain.

The new Masters of Wine are Almudena Alberca MW (Spain), Barbara Drew MW (UK), Olga Karapanou Crawford MW (USA), Regine Lee MW (UK), Elsa Macdonald MW (Canada), Thomas Parker MW (UK), Lindsay Pomeroy MW (USA), Nicolas Quillé MW (USA), Job de Swart MW (Netherlands) and Tim Triptree MW (UK). There are now 380 Masters of wine, based in 30 countries.

The new Members of the IMW have proved their understanding of all aspects of wine by passing the Master of Wine examination, recognised worldwide for its rigour and high standards. The MW examination consists of three stages, including theory and practical exams, and culminates in the submission of a final research paper, an in-depth study on a wine-related topic from any area of the sciences, arts, humanities, or social sciences. In addition to passing the examination, all MWs are required to sign the MW code of conduct before they are entitled to use the initials MW. The code of conduct requires MWs to act with honesty and integrity and to use every opportunity to share their understanding of wine with others.

September tastings

Cru Beaujolais 'half blind' tasting | 11 September 2018 | New York

Half blind series tastingIn the fall series of the 'half-blind' tastings, this session in New York City will focus on Cru Beaujolais from top producers. A series of MW-style questions will be distributed with the wines, and participants are encouraged to write their answers as they would for an exam. As with the earlier tastings, this event is not limited to Masters of Wine or MW students: it is open to anyone who would like to taste through the wines, and completion of the questions is not mandatory. Six wines will be tasted in an hour. The panel will consist of Charles Curtis MW, Roger Bohmrich MW, and Roger Dagorn MS. The combination of the MW and MS approaches that worked well last time will undoubtedly provide an interesting mix of ideas that will hopefully help everyone to understand both the wines and the process of blind tasting more thoroughly. The tasting will be strictly limited to 20 tasters. Find out more and book tickets here

The tasting note reads “Silken, floral, pretty and delicious. Pour this into a large-bowled glass and it delights at every turn. Plums, cherries, garden herbs and the polish of cedar wood. It’s mid-weight at most but delightful to drink, all ripples and streams. An immaculate red wine.”

Can you help?

Trademark protection in China

The IMW spend many resources securing trademark presence in geographies across the world, to protect the reputation of the IMW, and the individual Masters of Wine. We are doing lots of work in China at the moment and would be grateful for help that would assist our case in this region.

Please could you let us know if you have any evidence of the use of MW specifically in China, and preferably in Chinese? Such evidence could be in the form of articles, advertisements, or anything mentioning MW and China. We are specifically looking for evidence of use in mainland China, rather than Hong Kong. We have until the middle of September to pull anything together.

It would also be very helpful if some respected people in the wine industry in China could provide a statement as to the reputation and status of MW in China, that would also lend a lot of support to our arguments. We have the template of a letter in Mandarin that can be used. If you know of anyone who might be able to help, or you can help directly with any of the above please get in touch with Penny Richards, IMW Executive Director, as soon as possible.
