Join us for an exclusive tasting exploring China’s rapidly growing wine industry, moderated and introduced by Annette Scarfe MW and led by renowned expert Ch’ng Poh Tiong. As the Decanter Asia Regional Chair and a leading authority on Chinese wines, Ch’ng will guide attendees through a carefully curated selection of wines from key regions, offering insight into China’s diverse terroirs, grape varieties and winemaking styles.

This event will provide a structured tasting experience, complemented by expert analysis of the challenges and opportunities shaping Chinese wine. Attendees will also receive a signed copy of The Art of Pairing by Ch’ng Poh Tiong.

A preview of the tasting, from Ch’ng Poh Tiong:
“The go-to approach to understanding wine is usually through the prism of terroir. However, it is my belief a terroir comes into focus only when sites and locations are able to ripen grapes adequately and frequently. If ripening is a challenge, terroir DNA struggles to imprint itself. While not suggesting grapes do not ripen adequately in China, perhaps a more useful approach to understanding Chinese wine is to consider those regions which have to bury the vines and others spared this annual ritual. Wine growing is constantly evolving in China. Some growers have begun looking beyond the usual grape suspects. While not entirely ditching chardonnay and cabernet, riesling, petit manseng and pinot noir are making inroads. More sensitive winemakers are also allowing the fruit – rather than oak – define what is in the bottle. Attendees will be the first people outside China to taste a Chinese variety named, literally, Northern Star. “Polaris” is what I call this amazing varietal. The vines are able to survive up to minus 30° Celsius.”
