Tokaji, and increasingly its dry side through Furmint, is becoming well-known in the wine world thanks to campaigns like ‘Furmint February’, but there is much more to Hungary that this webinar aims to share.

Hungary has the eighth biggest vineyard area in the EU (considerably bigger than New Zealand for instance) and produces more wine than Austria or Greece, both countries with greater awareness around their wines. With 22 wine regions, 33 PDOs and 184 grape varieties being grown, Hungary is a diverse and complex country and one that has made huge strides forward in quality recently. As far as exports are concerned, the UK recently became the country’s top market for bottled wine, however as exports are limited further afield, the session will also take a look at how Hungarian wine is marketed and what opportunities and challenges lie ahead.

Panel
Caroline Gilby MW will moderate an expert panel of four guests:
Krisztina Csetvei – Csetvei Cellar, Mór
Mónika Debreczeni – Vylyan winery, Villány
Elizabeth Gabay MW – view MW profile
Izabella Zwack – Dobogó winery, Tokaj and Zwack and Co

About our panellists
Krisztina Csetvei owns a small winery in Hungary’s smallest wine region of Mór where she has pretty much been a one-woman band to put this almost forgotten wine region back on Hungary’s wine map.

Mónika Debreczeni is owner and managing director of Vylyan winery in the Villány region in southern Hungary, a region regarded by many as Hungary’s top red region. Mónika was thrown into the role when her husband died, though as she said she couldn’t abandon one of their children. She is one of the few women to head a winery in this part of Hungary.

Caroline Gilby MW started following Hungarian wines around 30 years ago as a wine buyer and later as a writer. In 2018 she was the first foreigner to be awarded the title of ‘Friend of Hungarian Winemakers’. She is also a member of the Confrérie de Tokaj and regional Co-chair covering Hungary at DWWA.

Elizabeth Gabay MW is based in France and became a Master of Wine in 1998. Elizabeth is an established Wine writer, speaker, consultant and educator with a specialty, among others, in Hungarian wine.

Izabella Zwack is a board director of Zwack and Co, her family’s company where she established a wine distributor in Hungary specialising in small wineries. She is also co-owner of the award-winning Dobogó winery in Tokaj.
