Packaging is an integral part of wine, having both an aesthetic and a functional role in protecting wine quality and representing a significant proportion of the global wine trade’s carbon footprint. The equivalent of 14 billion 75cl bottles of wine are produced each year, many of which are distributed internationally and often bottled in glass.
A cradle-to-grave life cycle assessment evaluates the environmental impacts associated with all stages of a product’s life, from raw material extraction, processing, manufacture, distribution, use and end of life disposal or recycling. Whilst the majority of wines are bottled in glass, there is an increasing number of alternative containers available and in development. How do these compare? What is the most sustainable option for a given wine? How could the trade close the loop and adopt a ‘reduce, re-use, recycle’ approach?
Our panel, with expertise in packaging design, glass manufacturing, filling and retail, will discuss the different options available, the pros and cons of each and the criteria to be taken into account when deciding on which wine packaging to use for which wine.
This event will be moderated by Jane Masters MW with an opportunity for attendees to ask questions. This is the fourth webinar in a collection of sustainability-themed events. Visit the IMW webinar series page to view previous events or save the date for future sessions.
