Frank Smulders MW releases Liskar wines

Frank Smulders MW has released his own wines, Liskar, from Navarra, Spain. Liskar is the name of a zone outside the village where one of the vineyards is situated.

Frank bottled the first harvests in June from a red (2019) and rosé (2020) wine from the Baja Montaña area in Navarra. Together with good friend and winemaker from Austria Ferdinand Mayr, he selected several very old parcels, planted between 1904 and 1950, to produce 100% Garnacha based wines. These vineyards are situated in and around the village of Liédena, in the most north-eastern corner of the region, which regularly benefits from the cold Cierzo wind, coming down from the Pyrenées. The wines were vinified by Frank and Ferdinand in the local cooperative, with which they started a project to conserve further old vine Garnacha vineyards in the area, as most have sadly disappeared in the past two decades.

In 2020 they also vinified a wine from a 0,48 HA plot, planted in 1900, in field blend. With eight varieties of which one white, it is a unique wine for Navarra, and is to be released next year.
