In the world of wine, few titles carry more weight than Master of Wine (MW). But what does the title truly represent, and how does it differ from becoming a Master Sommelier? In a recent episode of the Vint Podcast, we sat down with Rod Smith MW, Chairman of the Institute of Masters of Wine, to unpack the depth of the MW credential, the evolution of the wine industry, and why thoughtful, human-driven wine knowledge still matters.

Rod’s journey into wine was anything but conventional. Starting out in art school, he took a seasonal job at a London wine shop where a passionate mentor sparked his interest. That early exposure led to a lifelong career, with stops in retail, importing, and even supplying wine to private yachts in the French Riviera—an experience he recalls as both demanding and endlessly fascinating.

The Master of Wine program, as Rod explains, is fundamentally different from the more service-oriented Master Sommelier path. While an MS must field real-time questions from guests, MWs are tasked with understanding and articulating the “why” behind every wine—its origin, vinification, market potential, and structure. The program includes rigorous theory exams, analytical blind tasting essays, and an in-depth research paper. “It’s not about guessing the wine,” Rod says, “it’s about explaining how it came to be.”

Throughout the episode, Rod shares reflections on major themes in today’s wine world. The MW program has expanded globally, with growing representation in the U.S., Asia, and Latin America. He points to declining mass-market wine sales as a positive shift—what remains will be higher-quality and more compelling. He also champions regenerative viticulture as essential to the future of wine and defends prestige wines as necessary for supporting innovation across the industry.

One of the more memorable moments? Rod’s retelling of the Marathon du Médoc—a 26.2-mile race through Bordeaux’s vineyards, complete with wine tastings at each château. “You’re running past Lafite, sipping wine mid-race. It’s surreal—and very French.”

As for what Rod is drinking these days? Living in Provence, he’s enjoying Bandol reds, which he believes are finally coming into their own, along with frequent trips to Barolo and a deep appreciation for small-grower Champagne and revamped classics like Madeira.

Rod closes with a poignant reminder of why the MW program—and human wine expertise—still matters: “AI may one day analyze wine, but it can’t love it. It can’t connect wine to people, culture, and place. That’s what we do.”
