Sonal C Holland MW recognised at the IHM Mumbai’s Platinum Jubilee Celebration

Sonal C Holland MW, India’s first Master of Wine, was felicitated at the platinum jubilee celebration of The Institute of Hotel Management, Catering Technology, and Applied Nutrition, Mumbai. Mr. Amitabh Kant, Sherpa of G20 India, was the chief guest at the ceremony, while Mr Nakul Anand, former executive director of ITC Hotels was the guest of honour. Jayshree Bhoj, Secretary, Ministry of Tourism, Government of Maharashtra and Chairperson of the Governing Body of IHM, Mumbai, and Dr Nisheeth Srivastava, Principal of IHM Mumbai graced the event with their presence.

Sonal is a 1995 batch alumni of IHM Mumbai (also known as Dadar Catering College), a pioneer hotel management institute renowned for excellence in hospitality education and industry-relevant programs. Some other noted alumni of the institute who are also felicitated at the platinum jubilee celebrations are Karan Singh Grover, CV Ravindranath, Kainaz Messman, Kamlesh Barot and Sheila Vasan Singla. The event was attended by over 800 people, including many senior leaders and stalwarts from the hospitality industry.

After a brief stint in the hospitality industry and corporate sector, during which she also completed her MBA, Sonal decided to reinvent her career by pursuing higher education in wine. She was the first person from the country to be accepted for Wine & Spirit Education Trust’s Diploma in Wines and Spirits at the institute’s flagship school in London. Sonal studied wine for ten years and made history in 2016 by becoming India’s first Master of Wine, the most coveted title in the wine world currently held by 417 people across 31 countries.  She remains the only person in India to hold this title to date.

Sonal thinks of her time at IHM, Mumbai as some of the best years of her life during which she made incredible friends who are now working in various leadership positions across the hospitality industry and remain close allies in her professional growth.

Speaking on receiving the Achiever’s Award at the platinum jubilee celebration of her alma mater, Sonal says, “I firmly believe that the institution imparted more than education, giving finesse to my personality, and instilling etiquette and skills that played a huge role in shaping my professional and personal life. The institute has enabled me to stand tall on global platforms to represent India’s wine market with confidence and pride. I want to thank IHM Mumbai for bestowing this award on me and I am more than humbled to receive it.”
