R.G Barrett was the first Chairman of the IMW. He was the Managing Director of Denmans Wine Merchants, Piccadilly, London. He was the eldest student to take the MW examination. He was affectionately called “Dickie”. He must be considered “The Father” of the IMW, after incorporating the IMW as a Company Limited by Guarantee. A very friendly man with a smile as he greeted people. He was a member of the London Study Group where he tasted and exchanged knowledge with his peers, and of the 21 who sat the Group’s first examination, was one of the few successful.
