Institute of Masters of Wine Auction 2017

On 16 November 2017 the Institute of Masters of Wine will hold a unique event to help secure the future of the Institute, and to represent the very best the wine world has to offer.

At an Auction and Dinner hosted by Bonhams in London, the event will bring together a dazzling array of winemakers and wine lovers from across the globe.

Invited guests will have the unparalleled opportunity to bid for Super Lots exclusive experiences from the world of wine. In addition to the Super Lots there will be an online auction leading up to the event, with numerous wine-themed Lots, all curated and led by Masters of Wine. Guests will also experience a superb dinner with tastings of exquisite fine wines and an opportunity to mix with the best of the best in the international wine trade.

The Institute aims to raise a considerable sum for its Endowment Fund, set up more than 10 years ago. The funds have recently been used to purchase the Institute’s new permanent headquarters in London, which has been fitted out to suit the needs of the Institute’s Members, students and Executive team.

The Auction is spearheaded by Patrick McGrath MW and Fiona Morrison MW, supported by a group of international Masters of Wine. Fiona Morrison MW said, “The enthusiasm and interest we have already received about the Auction, from all corners of the world, has been fantastic. The money we raise will help us provide support to international students, increase the global reach to prospective Members, the Masters of Wine of the future, and extend the Institute’s range of activities in the wine world.”

The Institute is inviting Masters of Wine, Supporters and other friends from the global wine industry to participate. There are many ways to be involved, including:

  • Contributing items to the Super Lots and online Lots
  • Donating wines to be consumed on the night
  • Offering cash donations
  • Helping with introductions
  • Curating the Super Lots and online Lots

About the Institute of Masters of Wine (IMW)
The Institute of Masters of Wine (IMW) is a membership organisation with an exceptional international reputation. For almost 70 years, its members – the Masters of Wine (MWs) – have been at the forefront of leadership and expertise in the world of wine.  The IMW’s mission is to promote excellence, interaction and learning across all sectors of the global wine community. MWs prove their comprehensive understanding of wine by passing the MW examination, recognised worldwide for its rigour and exacting standards. In addition to passing the examination, members must sign the code of conduct before they are entitled to use the initials MW. This requires them to act with honesty and integrity, and use every opportunity to share their knowledge of wine with others.  Today, there are 353 Masters of Wine working in 29 countries. The membership encompasses winemakers, sommeliers, buyers, journalists, shippers, consultants, academics, educators and more. There are 350 students in the MW Study Programme from 40 countries.
