Peter Sisseck Named Winemakers’ Winemaker at ProWein 2011
Peter Sisseck has been named as the first recipient of the Winemakers’ Winemaker Award, presented by the Institute of Masters of Wine in conjunction with trade publication The Drinks Business.
The announcement was made at a reception during ProWein in Düsseldorf, Germany, where Lynne Sherriff MW, Chairman of the Institute, presented Sisseck with the award.
The award recognises outstanding achievement in the field of winemaking. Nominations were sought from winemakers across the globe, including Masters of Wine and other senior figures from the wine community.
The Danish-born and Bordeaux-trained oenologist established Dominio de Pingus in Spain’s Ribera del Duero with its first vintage in 1995, achieving almost instant acclaim. Today, it is one of the world’s iconic wines.
Speaking before an invited audience of more than 200 wine professionals at ProWein, Lynne Sherriff MW, who is herself a trained oenologist, said: “I am delighted to present Peter with the inaugural Winemakers’ Winemaker Award. His achievements speak for themselves and he is very highly regarded by his peers across the world. As such, he is an extraordinarily worthy first recipient of this award and a great ambassador for winemaking.”
On accepting the award, Peter Sisseck said: “I am honoured to be given this award. It is a very proud moment for me. We are all about making great wine and it is a great privilege to receive it.”
The Institute and The Drinks Business intend to present the award annually during ProWein, one of the world’s most significant wine trade events.
