I have spent the past 4 decades as a wine consultant, taster, blender, lecturer, journalist, editor, publisher, and author, primarily in northern California. I became a Master of Wine in 1991—and winner of the Tim Derouet award—after having passed the Master Sommelier Diploma examination in London, in 1986, where I also earned the Krug Cup. I have published continuously since 1981, in more than 15 trade and consumer outlets, including Wine Spectator, Decanter, and both the San Francisco Examiner and Nation's Restaurant News, where, at each, I was wine columnist for five years. I have been a wine judge for more than 35 years, and organized and directed the first professional all-Italian wine competition outside Italy, held in San Francisco in 1986 and in Chicago in 1987. I resided in the Napa Valley for 30 years, where I launched an on-premise business guide to wine, Restaurant Wine, in 1988—a publication now in its 33nd year, and for which I taste and review several thousand wines from around the world annually. I have given hundreds of wine trends and wine business lectures for a wide range of companies, organizations, and universities—from American Express to Bank of America—in the US and abroad. I also taught wine classes at Napa Valley College for 23 years; many local vintners and members of their hospitality and winemaking staffs attended. Some of my creative wine accomplishments include an exhaustive German Wine & Food Pairing matrix (developed for Wines of Germany); a line of personalized Ronn Wiegand wine glasses, produced by Germany's Eisch Glaskulture; publication of TasteTour varietal WineGuides and WineCharts for six major grape varieties; and the on-going blending of table wines—of all colors and styles, primarily from (but not limited to) those of the US and Europe—for negociants, importers, and producers, primarily in the USA.
