Deep Dive into Viticulture and Enology in the Lodi Appellation

The Lodi appellation is a significant and historic winegrowing region situated 40 miles south of Sacramento, California, and 90 miles east of San Francisco. Lodi’s Mediterranean climate and distinct soils allow its growers to cultivate 125 winegrape varieties, making Lodi the most diverse winegrowing region in the United States. Something to note, Lodi is home to the highest concentration of old, own-rooted vines in California including varieties like Zinfandel, Carignan, Cinsaut, and others. The region is also a leader in sustainable viticulture having created LODI RULES for Sustainable Winegrowing – America’s first sustainable vineyard certification program. Today, LODI RULES is widely regarded as the most comprehensive and rigorous certification in the world.

Host Lodi Winegrape Commission, the grower-centric organization representing 750 winegrowers farming more than 100,000 acres of winegrapes in the Lodi appellation, invites Masters of Wine students to spend two days for a hands-on educational experience. Participants will:

  • Dive deeper into the topics of viticulture and enology using the Lodi appellation as an outdoor classroom
  • Apply MW studies to real world wine business and operations
  • Learn from and engage directly with Lodi winegrowers and vintners throughout the visit
